Law school also adds more concentration areas to academic programming

Boston – February 13, 2019 – New England Law | Boston, the only independent, ABA-accredited law school in Massachusetts, today announced that it will offer two new certificate programs to enable students to gain specialty experience in the competitive legal fields of criminal law and compliance/risk management.

The school now offers four certificate programs in fast-growing and in-demand areas:

  • Compliance and Risk Management
  • Criminal Practice and Procedure
  • Immigration Law
  • Intellectual Property Law

These certificates are intensive programs designed to prepare students with the skills and experiences needed to launch careers in these rewarding legal specialties. They complement the school’s wide array of similarly competitive concentration programs.

Certificate programs

Students who enroll in one of the law school's four certificate programs must complete a number of credits in the practice area from designated courses and maintain a specified GPA. In addition, students must complete at least one clinic or other practical lawyering experience. Students who opt to complete a certificate program do so concurrently with their JD coursework. Completion of the certificate will be noted on their transcripts.

Former JAG Corps Officer and Professor Victor Hansen will direct the Criminal Practice and Procedure certificate program, which includes skill-building courses and clinics that place students alongside federal prosecutors, public defenders, private defense attorneys, business counselors, and judges. Professor Eric Lustig, who is also the director of New England Law’s Center for Business Law, will lead the Compliance and Risk Management certificate program. Professors Dina Francesca Haynes and Peter Karol will continue to direct the Immigration Law and Intellectual Property Law certificate programs, respectively.

“Our new certificate programs are among the many ways we adapt to the ever-evolving legal profession and provide students with the tools and experiences they need to have successful and rewarding careers,” said John Chalmers, Chief Enrollment Officer. “We are happy to incorporate additional specialized academic programming to meet the needs of our student body and look forward to celebrating their successes within these important and in-demand legal specialties.”

  • Small Firm Practice
