Business Law

“We deliver the tools students need to comprehend the structure underlying a tremendous range of business and personal transactions.”

Center for Business Law

The Center for Business Law (CBL) draws together and builds on the law school’s offerings in the broad areas of business law and provides opportunities for students to learn about the challenges and possibilities of business law practice. Professors in the CBL bring a practitioner’s perspective to the big picture of emerging issues and strategies. Our range of practice experience and scholarly interests include Commercial Law, Corporate Governance, Securities Practice, Federal Tax Planning and Practice, Estate Planning, Intellectual Property, Health Law, and Sports Law.

The CBL provides experiential learning opportunities for students through the Business Practice Credit and the Summer Fellowship Program. Our experiential placements range from small law firms to large publicly-held corporations as well as governmental agencies.  The experiences include litigation, transactional, and compliance work.
The CBL also sponsors conferences, symposia and colloquia, which expose our students to current issues of business law.  Our signature conference is the Commercial Law Conference. Past Commercial Law Conferences include Is the UCC Still Relevant, International Commercial Transactions: Sale of Goods, and Cross-Border Financing; and Is the Code Exploding or Imploding.
In addition to the Commercial Law Conference series, the CBL has sponsored or co-sponsored a wide range of events including the following panel discussions: The Legal and Compliance Issues in the Corporate Use of Personal Data; King v. Burwell (the Affordable Care Act case argued before the Supreme Court in March 2015); and the Market Basket Saga. The CBL also co-sponsored a colloquium on The Three Elements of a Successful Pharmaceutical Trademark—A Global Perspective.
CBL faculty members work closely with students in a number of different settings. CBL faculty members coach New England Law | Boston moot court and mock trial competition teams for the National Tax Moot Court Competition as well as the Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition in intellectual property law. In addition, students work with CBL faculty in researching ongoing business law review articles and casebooks. CBL faculty members also work with students who seek business-related pro bono opportunities, such as the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).
